    Arrive in Patagonia

    #42774

Welcome to Chilean Patagonia! The windswept plains of this southern region stretch on for miles, joining Chile’s rugged coastline and majestic mountain peaks into one of the world’s most awe-inspiring mountain environments, perched on the edges of the icy isthmus and fiords of the southern Pacific Ocean. This evening you’ll meet your trip leader in Puerto Natales and head out for dinner to a local restaurant for your first taste of Patagonia Cuisine.
    Accommodation: Hotel Natalino, Puerto Natales
    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2

    Biking in Puerto Natales

    #42775

Puerto Natales is surrounded by an incredible combination of forests, mountains, glaciers, and fjords. This fusion of landscapes provides a unique environment that in turn allows us to understand the deep love the Patagonians have for their land, a land of pioneers. We’ll enjoy this fusion of colors, smells, and landscapes on our bikes, through the Patagonian forest, then following the coast of the Ultima Esperanza fjord with views of the Moore Range, Whale Hill, and Mount Pratt.

We’ll arrive at the Perales Ranch for a typical Patagonian lunch, the famous ‘Asado de Cordero’. The Alvarez family have been pioneers in the exploration of the Austral channels and their descendants have sailed the fjords for generations.

Afterward, we’ll head back to Puerto Natales for some downtime before dinner together.
    Accommodation: Hotel Natalino, Puerto Natales
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After lunch we’ll head back south and journey further into the park, stopping off along the way for views of Lake Nordenskjold and Lake Pehoe before arriving at Kau Rio Serrano, our accommodation for the next 4 nights.

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Start 'W' hike, Torres del Paine National Park

Today we’ll begin the legendary four-day ‘W’ hike, an amazing trek among sheer granite peaks, snow-clad mountains, glacial lakes and the thick Magellanic forest. We’ll follow the Rio Ascensio Valley as it winds its way up to the park’s namesake. As we reach the top of the boulder field near the end of our hike, we’ll come face to face with one of the most famous mountain landscapes in the world – above you, three mammoth granite peaks rise like tombstones from the rugged hills and snow-coated mountains of Patagonia to pierce the sky Torres del Paine (‘Towers of Blue’). At a height of about 3,000 feet (900 meters), they are believed to be the highest natural cliff faces in the world. Tonight you’ll sleep well at a cozy refugio (mountain lodge), a welcome sight after a full day’s hike. Only a light day pack is required as it's a return hike. There are shorter options available.

After a scrumptious breakfast, we’ll head back to Lake Pehoe where we’ll hop on a catamaran across to Refugio Paine Grande. Our hike today takes us toward the French Valley for a closer look at Los Cuernos, and at the base of the French Valley, we’ll have incredible views of ravines. It is probably one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever see, with multiple glaciers cascading down its steep sides, creating a patchwork of ice and rock. We may catch a glimpse of the impressive French Glacier, the Paine Massif and Cuernos granite towers in the background. We’ll enjoy lunch along the way before hiking back down on the same trail, making our way back to the catamaran, and onward to our accommodation, with time to relax before dinner.

It’s an easier hike today, as we contour around the northern shore of Lake Nordenskjold, a glacial lake in the heart of the national park. As we head around the lake, we’ll start to see glimpses of Los Cuernos – Spanish for ‘The Horns’ – three fantastically sculpted grey and white sedimentary and granite peaks rising 800 feet (244 meters). The intense turquoise hue of the lake and the starkness of the mountains make for spectacular photo opportunities. This evening, we’ll stay in the shadow of the mountains at Refugio Los Cuernos.

W-Trek Backcountry Hiking: Hike French Valley, Torres del Paine National Park

We’ll rise with the sun this morning to begin our hike up French Valley for a closer look at Los Cuernos. The track steepens as we ascend a ridge line to the upper French Valley past waterfalls and mountain tarns. At the top, we’ll have incredible views of a massive natural amphitheater, filled with the awesome French Glacier, the Paine Massif and Cuernos granite towers. W-Trek Comfort Hiking: Hike Los Condores & Los Cuernos

After breakfast, we’ll make our way to Weber Bridge, which crosses the confluence of Lake Pehoe and Lake Del Toro, where we’ll start our hike up to Mirador Condor. We’ll hike through a small valley on the Lazo-Weber trail, crossing an ancient Lenga Forest on our way up to a lookout point. The Lenga tree, nothofagus pumilio, is a member of the beech family and has been staked amidst fierce winds and a tough climate. Along the exposed subalpine slopes that mark the upper reaches of its habitable range, the Lenga tree sometimes grows into wild, twisted, wind-blown shapes. At the top, we’ll have incredible views of the entire Torres del Paine mountain range as well as Lakes Honda, Sarmiento & Verde. We’ll head back down, enjoying lunch along the way and once we reach the end of the trail, we’ll travel north toward Lake Nordenskjold. Our afternoon hike will take us to Mirador Cuernos, lying in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park, which is the best spot to view Los Cuernos, ‘The Horns’. We’ll stop off at Salto Grande along the way, a very picturesque waterfall that flows out from Lake Icefield, it is part of the world’s third largest reserve of fresh water and forms a natural dam connecting Lakes Nordenskjold and Pahoe through the Paine river. The water level on the southern side of the lake can rise up to 90 feet (30 meters) above the level of the main lake. Useful Info

Do you provide any gear for the W-Trek Backcountry Hiking option?

You’ll need a good quality trekking pack with a volume of ~60 litres (3500 cubic inches) for the W-Trek hike, large enough to fit your sleeping bag inside along with all your multi-day gear. You’ll also need a nice warm sleeping bag for the W-trek, something rated down to at least ~0°C (32°F) is ideal.

We can provide both items for an extra fee, along with Hiking poles which we highly recommend. Please select these items when you make your booking so we know you require them

Please note that some refugios may provide sleeping bags, however we ask you bring or rent your own to ensure a clean bag is available to you each night.

What accommodations do we stay at on this trip?

We’ve selected the accommodation for the unique character and adventuresome feel – this trip is not designed as a tour of the fanciest hotels in Patagonia. We prefer to stay in quaint, comfortable B&B’s and lodges. Things get a little more rustic when we head to the Refugio’s during the W-trek. The Refugio's are like backcountry lodges with hot showers, three course meals, bunk beds and it’s all part of a truly amazing experience! The rest of the time we stay in clean, comfortable, family-owned inns and hotels in the heart of the action.

If you've selected a single supplement for your trip, both the W-Trek Hike and W-Trek Experience portions of the trip (Days 3 – 7) are not included as no single rooms are available in the refugio's/lodges, and the single supplement price takes this into account.

We recommend bringing enough clothing to only have to do laundry once during your trip, and the best time will be after your W-trek once we return to Puerto Natales.

Tell me about the W-Trek Backcountry Hiking option?

This amazing trek will take you past sheer granite peaks, snow-clad mountains, glacial lakes and through thick Magellanic forest. While it might be a bit of a challenge, the rewards are well and truly worth it! The trek is close to sea level so you won’t be dealing with any altitude factors. The trail is 64 kilometres (40 miles) in total length and we average around 6 hours or 16 kilometres (10 miles) per day. The greatest elevation reached on the W-trek is 1200 metres (3900 feet) at the highest point in
the French Valley - you can go as high as you like. The trails are very well maintained so finding your way is never a problem. You’ll only be carrying the gear needed for the 5 days, your excess gear and luggage will be stored securely for you in Puerto Natales.

During the W-trek in Torres del Paine National Park you’ll be spending four nights in rustic mountain lodges, known locally as refugio’s. Each refugio sleeps 30-50 people with shared bunk rooms of up to 6-10 people, shared bathrooms and hot showers. You’ll have a mattress with a pillow and you’ll use your sleeping bag – if you’re a light sleeper we recommend ear plugs and an eye mask to get a good night’s sleep, it’s all part of the adventure! Meals are served in the restaurant and there’s a bar that accepts pesos, dollars, euros and credit cards if you fancy a drink. The refugio’s have only basic heating facilities.
On occasion it may be the case the refugio is full, and in this instance we’ll camp out for the night in this amazing location. We’ll pitch your tent near the refugio so you’ll still have full use of the facilities.

NOTE: Sometimes the generators are turned off overnight therefore if you’re bringing a CPAP, it will need to be battery
operated.

Where does the trip start?

On the first day of the trip we’ll meet you at Hotel Natalino, in Puerto Natales, Chile at 5pm. You are welcome to book your pre-trip stay at this hotel directly or any other hotel in Puerto Natales, though you must make your own way to Hotel Natales at the pre-designated time.

Tell me about the W-Trek Comfort Hiking option?

An alternative option is to spend five days exploring the incredible Torres del Paine National Park with amazing day trips that will take you from sheer granite peaks and snow-clad mountains, to glacial lakes and thick Magellanic forests. You’ll spend all four nights at Kau Rio Serrano, a comfortable lodge from where you’ll head out each day to explore some of the best sights this park has to offer. Each day will offer both morning and afternoon activities, hiking around 3-4 hours (on average) with a maximum elevation gain of 700m – though every hike is flexible. You’ll walk around Azul Lagoon and hike toward the French Valley, choose to kayak Lake Grey, and climb up to some of the best viewpoints to take in the Torres del Paine mountain range. This option really does give you a chance to see and experience it all!

Kau Rio Serrano is located in the small town of Serrano on the banks of the river of the same name, surrounded by the beautiful nature that characterises Patagonia and with an impressive view of the Paine mountain range. The lodge is equipped with excellent facilities and comfortable rooms with central heating. Meals are served in the restaurant where there’s a bar that accepts pesos, dollars, euros and credit cards if you fancy a drink.

Is tipping expected in Patagonia?

Most people do choose to tip their Active Adventures trip leader and USD$20 per day, per guest, per trip leader (and US$10 each per day for your W-trek guide if you’re going to Southern Patagonia). You are welcome to tip an equivalent amount in the local currency. There are plenty of ATM’s and banks in the larger towns of Patagonia. During your Active Adventures trip, your trip leader will take care of all included restaurants and service tips for you.

For other restaurants or services during your time in Patagonia, 5-10% is a typical gratuity amount.

How do rooming arrangements work?

Trip prices are based on shared arrangements (typically two guests per room), unless otherwise stated. For solo travelers, we’ll pair you with another person of the same gender to share rooms and if there’s no one suitable to share with, there’s no forced single supplement. However, if you specifically request your own rooms, you can opt to pay the single supplement. Solo travelers who book within 90 days of departure, where there are no other solo travelers willing to share, will be required to pay the single supplement.

For Family Vacation bookings, families consisting of four guests traveling with children aged 17 and under will be automatically assigned one shared room. However, the following alternative rooming allocations are available:

  • Families consisting of four guests with all children aged 13 and above are welcome to opt for additional rooms as per advertised double occupancy adult rates.
  • Families consisting of four guests with at least one child aged 12 and under are automatically assigned a shared room. However, families can opt to pay the adult rates for all guests in their family to have an additional room.
  • The same principles apply for families consisting of more than four guests.

Rooming preferences are subject to availability and must be communicated in writing at time of booking. Automatic assignments as per this policy will be applied in the absence of any specification provided by guests. Any request for additional rooms during trips will be at guests’ own expense and subject to rates made available by the accommodation provider at the time. All minors (guests aged 17 and under) must be accompanied by at least one adult.
